Brooks Gibbs and the grass-roots movement that made Scientology blink

What a surprising few weeks it’s been for us reporting on what’s been happening in Clearwater, Florida, the town that Scientology has been trying to turn into its own Vatican.

And maybe the most surprising thing about it has been the sudden rise of a grass-roots campaign to oppose Scientology’s plans, led by local educator Brooks Gibbs.

Now that Scientology leader David Miscavige has withdrawn Scientology’s application to buy a small street from the city, we talked with Brooks about his last-minute challenge to those plans with his own vision of how Clearwater could honor its past.
