Court TV fan disappointed no cameras: Danny Masterson Re-Trial, Day 3, lunch break
We’re reporting this morning from Judge Charlaine Olmedo’s courtroom, where we’re acting as pool reporter during the jury selection phase of Danny Masterson’s retrial.
What follows is the same report we sent out to reporters who had asked to receive a copy…
While the jurors are still out, the attorneys stipulate to releasing jurors
18, 38, and 42.
Juror 58. Man. Clerk in DA's office. Long Beach. Doesn't know Mueller or Anson. Fair? Yes. Criminal case in 2013, assault with deadly weapon. Heard of Scientology only because Tom Cruise is part of it.
Juror 59. Woman. Studied in school, cell biology. The incident with half brother, 2 or 3 years ago. Involve yourself? Yes. You were in college? Yes. Did the police get called? I reported. Did it go through the courts? No. Can you be fair? Yes.
Juror 60. Man. What part of LA? East. Significant other, office work at shipping firm. Civil case, 6 years ago, about money, about a house. Family member in jail, a cousin. Evidence about sexual incidents, can you be fair? Yes.
Juror 61. Woman. Your significant other in post-production. Any familiarity with Mr. Masterson? No. Criminal case was 1988, about drug possession. Other criminal case she doesn't recall. Sexual incidents, can you be fair? Yes.
Juror 62. Woman. Inglewood juvenile courthouse. On a criminal case, early 2000, about drugs, did reach a verdict. Exposure to Scientology on TV: I do have negative feelings about Scientology, based on TV show and other thing. But she says she can be open minded and fair. Watches CourtTV every day. She's disappointed no cameras. Fair? Yes. Asks for a sidebar.
Juror 63. Woman. On a case 12 or 13 years ago, for a prostitution charge. Fair? Yes.
Juror 64. Man. On 2 criminal cases, early in the 1970s. One was rape, and the other was male prostitution. Reached verdicts in both. Fair? Yes.
Juror 65. Woman. She works in this building. (court reporter?) Two criminal juries 1999, drug drop case, 2012 child molestation.
Juror 66. Woman. DUI case a few years ago. The incident with son, obviously has strong feelings. Can judge police like others? Yes. Hold anything about DA about son's case? Not any more. Scientology: On TV over the years. Also watches a lot of Court TV. I watch a lot about religion in general, but I don't have a specific bias against Scientology. Fair? Yes.
Juror 67. Woman. On a grand jury before. Fair? Yes.
Juror 68. Woman. Retired from DWP payroll. Civil case? Can't remember how long ago. The incident that involved serving 35 years, her brothers. Same incident? Different. Here in LA. Can still be fair? Yes.
Juror 70. Woman. Can you be fair to both sides? Yes.
Juror 71. Man. Technical side of TV? Yes. Significant other in textile design. Civil case, 2018, bullying and harassment in workplace. Judge a police officer like any other? Yes. Needs a sidebar. Scientology: Aware of it from TV, I have an office near their facility in Hollywood. Fair? Yes. I do recognize one name you listed earlier, Jordan Ladd.
Juror 72. Woman. Residential property management. Incident about her daughter. Can be fair? Yes.
Juror 73. Woman. What type of jury trial? I was the accuser. Criminal case. Did you have to testify on the stand? Yes. Regarding your feelings about Scientology, will you keep an open mind and be fair? Yes. Can be fair about the charges, forcible rape? No. Thank you, ma'am.
Juror 74. Woman. Entertainment industry. Had any dealing with Masterson or his family? No. Criminal case, 10 years ago, prostitution. Can you judge police the same? Yes. Evidence regarding sexual charges, can you be fair? Yes. Worked with Scientologists? Yes. Did they talk to you about it? No. Some general knowledge of this case from the news media, nothing specific. Fair? Yes.
Juror 75. Man. Work with police in your job? Not directly, no. Works on comm systems that facilitate law enforcement. Criminal case, 2015, breaking and entering. Scientology: Just generally familiar. From media? Googling. Fair? Yes. While he respects juries, concerned about the length of time and how it would affect his career. Just took a new job and isn't sure how it would impact it. Judge Olmedo thanks him for his eloquent way of saying he doesn't want to serve.
Juror 77. Woman. Before homemaker, worked for Vons. Husband is a civil attorney. Son is a DA in Los Angeles. Would you vote in a way to please your son? That's a good question. May be hard for me. I could try. I appreciate th candor.
Juror 78. Woman. She works for a trash company and her partner for grocery? (Hard to understand her. Asian woman with heavy accent.) She she would have a hard time judging police fairly.
Juror 79. Woman. Retired from immigration, administrative officer. Sex incidents or gun, remain fair? Yes.
Juror 80. Man. UCLA. The incident involving yourself, 2014. Police called. Yes. Never reached court. Rape case. Can be fair? Yes.
Juror 81. Man. A little familiar with Scientology. From Google. Some time ago, don't remember anything. Fair? Yes.
Juror 83. Woman. Work for LA County public health, facilities inspection. Civil case in early 1990s, damage to a vehicle. Son's incident, 2015. Evaluating sexual incidents, said she'd try. But what does that mean? I would do the best I could under the circumstances. Scientology: Aware of its existence. Saw Leah Remini program. Fair? Yes.
Juror 84. Woman. I work for SoCal gas. Ex-partner, was in the Marines. Incident involving theft/drugs, involved her nephew. Probably two years ago. Incident with sister, in the 1980s, something she said occurred, but no evidence and never brought to the police. Scientology, has seen them in the streets. She goes to Kaiser and sees them in the street trying to pass out things. Fair? Yes.
Juror 85. Woman. Ever worked with rape victims. Yes. An occasional person. Criminal case, several years ago, one was a manslaughter, the other was in Westwood a jewelry robbery that was a third strike. Scientology: Some dealings with proximity to Kaiser, where she worked. Wearing hearing aids. Has heard about half of what she said. Hasn't heard most of what other people have said.
Juror 87. Man. In your job, dealt with parishioners confessing bad acts to you? Yes. Incident with brother, 8 to 10 years ago, in Philippines. Scientology, you are familiar, a little bit. From TV or something like that, Leah Remini show. Indicated some concern about Scientology because of your own strong faith. Fair? Yes.
Juror 88. Man. Sales of antiques and collectibles. Significant other, before they passed, was software engineer. Evidence regarding sex or firearms, can you be fair? No.
Juror 89. Woman. Ex-significant other, software engineer. Civil case, 8 years ago. Fair? Yes.
Juror 90. Man. Lives in Arcadia/Pasadena area. Clerk at City Hall. Significant is social media assistant. Scientology, watched the South Park episode. Might have seen it last few years. Fair? Yes. Asks for sidebar.
Juror 91. Woman. Significant other retired from operations at IT company. Evaluating evidence about sexual incidents and firearms, she says she will try her best. Fair? Yes. Has plans to go to Egypt, late May for hajj. It's preplanned. Selected to go with handicapped sister. Once in a lifetime selection.
Juror 92. Woman. Entertainment, involved with Mastersons? No. Some knowledge about this case, from news. Fair? Yes.
Juror 93. Woman. Stay at home mom. Studied theater before, performed, in Los Angeles. Incident in 2004, would that impact you? No. In LA? Yes. Were you fairly treated? Yes. Scientology knowledge, acquaintance who was a former member. She doesn't really talk about it. With this case, seen a little about it. Fair? Yes.
Juror 94. Woman. Knowledge of Scientology comes from... No knowledge, just aware of it. Fair? Yes.
Juror 96. Man. Works for UCLA. ("Go Bruins!" he says. Judge loves it.) Ex-partner, what did they do: graphic design. Criminal case, mid-2000s, embezzlement. Judge a police office the same? No. You would be less likely to believe them? Yes. Good and bad in every job? No. So for you it's a hard no, based on police. Yes. Thank you for your candor.
Juror 97. Man. Sexual evidence: I"m open-minded but I have strong moral beliefs based on people I know. Going to have to have him come back for the second group because he was late.
Juror 98. Woman. Civil case, 20 years ago, auto accident. Adult child is a lawyer, employment law. Scientology, not too familiar, just knows some celebrities in it. You've worked with DCFS with regards to investigations of sexual abuse. Fair? Yes. Asks for a sidebar.
Juror 99. Woman. Sworn officer? Yes, but no penal code against her serving. State police agency, Calif Dept Insurance Fraud Division. An incident with yourself as a child. 40 years ago, young and intimidated, never reported. Scientology, through Leah Remini show. Heard about this case, I do get information on my news feed. Has cases she's involved in in.
Juror 101. Woman. Civil case in late 1990s, wife suing her ex-husband. Working on a task force, law enforcement, with Dept of Justice, state. Knows some general allegations about this case. Fair? Yes.
Juror 102. Woman. Work with immigration. Open mind about evidence of sexual incidents or firearms. Yes. Fair? Yes.
Taking the lunch break, still 8 potential jurors left over who will come back to be taken care of at 1:30.
She lists several people to talk at sidebars at lunch.
Juror 91 can be excused. Juror 96 too.
