Even more Scientology content came in yesterday as direct examination of Jane Doe 3 was completed at the Danny Masterson retrial in Los Angeles, and there was one moment in particular we wanted to highlight before what we expect is going to be a full day of cross-examination of Jane Doe 3 today.
Again, the level of detail about Scientology is much more granular than it was in the first trial. We learned yesterday, for example, that one of the things Jane Doe 3 was required to do after she reported her December 2001 rape to ethics officer Miranda Scoggins and her husband, chaplain Chris Scoggins, was to make “amends” to Masterson. This included, she said, getting his car washed.
We meant to point this out in yesterday’s wrap-up video, but then forgot to mention it. So we want to point it out here: Scientology not only told a rape victim not to characterize her rape as “rape,” not only convinced her that she was at fault for her own victimization, but also indoctrinated her about this point of view by making her get her rapist’s car washed.
This is the kind of thing that Scientology works very hard and spends huge piles of money keeping out of court testimony in civil lawsuits, and the church also attempted, comically, to keep Scientology out of this criminal trial.
That attempt failed, however, and Judge Olmedo has ruled that Scientology is going to be even more a part of the retrial than the first trial, and the church is powerless to stop it. As a result, we’re getting some incredible insights about this organization, like a rape victim forced to wash her rapist’s car.
But is anyone listening? After a full courtroom on Monday, press row has been pretty empty for the last two days of testimony, and the reporters we were used to seeing at the first trial — from the national television networks, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, The Wrap, Deadline, Court TV, Law and Crime, and others — have stopped coming. We suspect they’ll all be back if a verdict is reached in several weeks, but for now these folks are missing some real gems about Scientology coming out in this retrial.
Scientology must be breathing a sigh of relief about that.
