The LAPD's competence overall is something the jury will take into account when evaluating the veracity of these witnesses. Not having corroboration for the gun back in 2003 is perhaps the biggest thing the defense has. Which is not much at all. When you're facing 45 years just for rape that is a life sentence, don't even need the gun enhancement.
Now for the cross-pollination you mentioned. What evidence do you have of this?! Their stories are similar because they were raped in a similar way. JD1 and JD2 stories are most similar, and they have been consistently saying the same things a decade before they knew each other. This was testified to by JD2's Mom and JD2's best friend.
