Sigh. It was Heber who recruited me into the Sea Org in 1970. He was on mission to the Denver Mission, dressed in buckskins, playing a banjo and leading us all in song. Such a good guy back then.

More than anything else it's the story of Alexander's young death and the cruel, knife-twisting sadism perpetuated on Karen by Scientology as she begged to be allowed to kiss him goodbye which got me so heavily invested in helping to expose their abuses.

Also one of the things that got me so interested in the whole thing.

Poor Heber. I'm looking forward very much to Karen's insights.

I’m mapping out my 4th book, and it’s something I’ve pondered for a while. I have always thought about Heber.

I have Been a Scientology watcher for years now, and was also a social worker for the elderly before I became a writer/autistic advocate/touring speaker.

I think I’ve finally nailed the concept listening to your podcast with Karen De La Carriere - and want to call my book The Missing President : Where is the President of Scientology?

Heber seemed to be well liked by the press and Scientologists - which is a rarity, and want to highlight that good people can be sucked into a cult and trapped for life.

I’d love to raise awareness of his plight. My books are published by Beyond Words - publisher of The Secret - but I have another idea.

Here’s my plan - I’m going to self-publish it, and hopefully launch it in Clearwater on March 13th 2024 - Hubbards birthday. I’d love to fill Ruth Eckerd Hall - because Scientology can’t!!!

If there’s one thing I do well - it’s book launches!

I would love to connect with Heber’s family, Karen, you, and anyone who can help to make this happen. I’m going to reach out to some others too.

Here is my site where you can learn more about me and I’d love to connect further -

Best wishes and thanks for all you do.

One of the things I think might be misunderstood by former Scientologists is that to the lay person, the beliefs of Scientology are so wacky that one wonders why any normal person could believe in them. This might be why the jury could not understand why the Jane Does went along with Masterson’s actions for so long. Also explains why law enforcement doesn’t pursue the spying and other nefarious OSA activities - they probably feel that if people are so (deranged? confused? misled?) as to have believed in Scientology in the first place, it’s their own problem when they get crosswise with the “Church.”

Suggestion for SubStack, or whoever: It would be helpful if there was a volume control slider, like many other podcast sites, as part of the podcast controls.

Karen is just unbelievably strong and beautiful, and has at the very least an enthusiastic one-woman fan club in snowy Idaho. Total heart-eyes for her. 😍😍😍

I’m glad Heber is in a nursing home. At least we can hope he’s getting a bit of compassionate care. Miscavige turned Heber into a different man than he was in the 1970s. I will never forget the evening we spent on the Alpine Slide in Park City with him whooping and hollering.

And a decent diet, and attention to his health and hygiene needs, bless him :)

That sounds like an amazing evening, Val!

This interview was one of my favorites because I learned more but the friendship is truly something I admire listening to what the world would be if we all respected one another. Keep it going! A great interview that shows what humanity truly is
