Radar is the latest outlet that is citing unnamed sources that say John Travolta is ditching Scientology. This time, they’re pointing to Travolta selling his house in Clearwater as evidence that he wants less to do with David Miscavige’s cabal there.
But we remember when he first put that house up for sale three years ago. And we also remember that it was Tracey McManus at the Tampa Bay Times who first reported that it was a family trust run by Travolta’s sister Ellen that bought the waterfront home in 2017, which suggested that it was more of a real estate investment than a move for John. In fact, John has long been based in Ocala, Florida, which is about 120 miles to the north of Clearwater.
So maybe the headline should have been, “House bought by Travolta family trust in Clearwater is still for sale.” But that’s less sexy, right?
But what really caught our attention was the way that Radar is citing those unnamed sources to claim that Travolta is leaving Scientology after the death of his wife Kelly Preston in 2020. The source says that a rift developed between Travolta and Scientology because Preston sought out chemotherapy for her cancer.
As we’ve pointed out many times, while Scientologists often seek alternative medical treatments because of founder L. Ron Hubbard’s attitude toward western medicine, Scientology does not get in the way of a Scientologist seeking legitimate care for cancer or other ailments. And especially when the Scientologist is a celebrity,
But what really irks us about these tabloid stories about Travolta supposedly leaving, is that they never cite hard evidence to the contrary.
We’re talking about the photos we’ve published here at the Bunker that demonstrate Travolta’s presence at the last two L. Ron Hubbard Birthday Events in Clearwater.
Hubbard was born on March 13, 1911, and his birthday is the holiest day on the Scientology calendar. Each year, an event is held in his honor at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. In 2023, with the pandemic still lingering, the event was held instead at the auditorium of the Fort Harrison Hotel, the heart of the Flag Land Base in Clearwater.
In a photo from Scientology’s own press release of that event, you can see that Travolta was there, along with Jenna and Bodhi Elfman.
This year, the event returned to Ruth Eckerd Hall, and not only was Travolta in the front row, but in another photo from a Scientology press release Travolta was giving church leader David Miscavige a standing ovation, and he was with a very pregnant Elisabeth Moss.
This the first time we’ve ever seen Moss at one of these events, and we think it’s a pretty big deal that she would be there in that condition, giving Miscavige standing ovation, and being shepherded by Travolta.
So sure, we get it that tabloid publications like to stir the pot by citing unnamed sources saying that Travolta is on the way out. But shouldn’t they at least acknowledge this hard, irrefutable proof that he’s as dedicated, and obedient to Miscavige as ever?

Radar on Line blew it. I smell a plant similar to the those stories about Tom Cruise leaving the Clampire. The ROL also has a story about Tom Cruise buying an expensive house in the UK to be near his latest 'love interest'. And then there is a story about the late Prince Consort, Philip, being involved in 'dating' the girls from the Profumo Affair. Where are the Big foot alien space babies when you need them?
When Spanky Taylor lets you know he’s contacted her and apologized to her for how he treated her last time they talked, I’ll start believing stories about him being on his way out.
