Last week’s story about a leaked new version of the Scientology staff contract got a bigger reaction than we were expecting. Radar magazine picked it up, we heard from a lot of readers, and Claire Headley invited us on her podcast.
Claire not only wanted to talk about the new contract and its arbitration clause (which has wreaked so much havoc on lawsuits filed by ex-Scientologists), but she had something of a surprise as well: A similar contract she had signed at only 16 years old in 1991.
We were eager to compare them, and to talk about what might have prompted the contract to change so much over time.
We also got to reminisce a little — has it really been more than a year now since we were in the courtroom and got to see Claire testify at Danny Masterson’s second trial? Wow.
Here is that contract Claire signed in 1991…

So a 'freeloader' bill can be full cost or 1/2 cost? If I read it correctly, some staff members only get 1/2 off of the 'donation rates' Such a deal. The use of 'guardians' that have 'officially' taken charge of minors was a fairly common thing in the past.
Clams would set up a guardian for those at the 'Mace Kingsly Ranch' or other living arrangements and then the parents would disappear from their child's life. What could go wrong? Well, your 14 year old child could be 'recruited' to any staff or Sea bOrg job and the 'guardian' would of course, approve that. Put that little thetan to work. Its time they earned their keep.
Tony and Claire: I don't know the details of the contracts in the other cases. I did notice that Claire's contract was signed in 1991 BUT CoS was not granted tax-exempt 'religious' status in the US until 1993.
I am not a lawyer, but I think that would give Scientology less standing in the US courts that the arbitration agreed to in that contract should be legally considered 'religious' in nature and so go through their process. [Which means it would be more risky to try to force arbitration back then.]
